Senior Center Meeting Held

Over 30 people showed their interest in organizing a senior group to meet and enjoy various activities together. An informational meeting, moderated by Mayor Joey Normand, was held on Tuesday, June 24th at the Brusly Town Hall. Anatole Vincent, Director for the West Baton Rouge Parish Parks and Recreation Department, was also present to listen to the interests and ideas of the group.

Among the interests discussed were low-impact aerobics/exercise, jewelry making, computer classes, crocheting, knitting, bingo, dancing, board games, French classes, walking, quilting, genealogy, crafts, bridge, poker and other card games.

“West Baton Rouge Parish Parks and Recreation is fully behind any Senior Citizen program in the Brusly and Addis area, ” Vincent said. ” Whether it be facility use, manpower, or funding, the WBR Parks and Recreation is looking for ways to facilitate the older population in our community,” he continued.

The former Arts & Crafts Building, which the Parish owns, located on Elaine Street was identified as a potential center for senior activities. Some activities could also be held in the Brusly Town Council meeting room, according to Mayor Normand.

An Advisory Committee was formed which includes Babs Babin, Sara Grady, Lucy Landry, Gerald Mabile and Janis Stoner. Mayor Normand and Anatole Vincent will serve in an ex-officio capacity. The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2nd.

In order for the committee to make plans, they are very interested in ideas, needs and talents of the senior citizens in the Brusly/Addis area. This newsletter is being sent in order to give people unable to attend the meeting, a chance to provide information to the committee.

Participation will NOT be limited to Brusly residents only. We invite and encourage any senior, 50 and older, from Brusly, Addis, Port Allen, Erwinville and other local areas to participate. Feel free to pass the word among family and friends.

Please take a few moments to fill out the form and return it to the Brusly Town Hall either by dropping it off during office hours, putting it in the drop box after office hours or mailing it to P. O. Box 510, Brusly, LA 70719. A reply is requested by July 31st.
