Minutes of the Brusly Landmark & Heritage Commission – October 20, 2008

A meeting of the Brusly Landmark and Heritage Commission was held on Monday October 20, 2008 in the Centennial Room, Brusly Town Hall, Brusly, Louisiana.

Chairman Rills called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.

Voting members present: Jim Rills, Shane Sarradet, Rose Jackson.

Voting members absent: Margaret Canella, Shirley Jordan.

Non-voting members present: Brian Falcon.

Non-voting members absent: Jason Creighton, Kevin Durbin.

Others present: Marianne Berthelot, Joanne Bourgeois.

Mrs. Berthelot, the secretary made a correction to the July 21, 2008 minutes stating that Mrs. Jordan made the motion to approve the minutes of the previous meeting, not Mr. Sarradet.

Upon motion of Mr. Sarradet, seconded by Mrs. Jackson, the minutes of the July 21, 2008 meeting were approved.

Landmark Plaque Applications. Members were informed that ten additional applications have been received since the July 21st meeting.

1. John Bres for the Bres/Vaughan Home
2. Roxanne Morales for the Willie LeJeune Home.
3. Russ Bourgeois for the Clifford Thibodeaux Home.
4. Dianne Martin for the Joseph Feriol Dupuy Home.
5. Landess Hebert for the Clay and Rita Hebert Home.
6. Landess Hebert for the Furcy Rodriguez Home.
7. Landess Hebert for the Leocadie Thibodeaux Home.
8. Edith Owens for the Owens Home.
9. Edith Owens for the J. H. Blanchard, Sr. Home.
10. Wanda L. Magee/Joanne Bourgeois for the Sanford LaBauve Home.

The applications were reviewed and it was determined that all requirements were met. Mr. Sarradet made a motion to approve the certification of the ten properties as landmarks and award a plaque and certificate to each at the next Plaque Awards Ceremony. Mrs. Jackson seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

Mrs. Jackson recommended that the Herbert Jackson home known as the Brusly Day Care be included in the above list. The property meets all requirements and there was no objection. Mr. Sarradet made a motion to approve this property also subject to the approval of the owner. Mrs. Jackson seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

The Herbert Jackson Home is added to the above list as Number 11, pending owner approval.

St. James Square/Molaisonville Markers and Plaque Awards. The ceremonies for dedicating the State of Louisiana Historic Marker for St. James Square and Molaisonville and the presentation of the Certified Landmark Plaques will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2008 beginning at 3:00 PM at St. James Square. The ceremonies will then move to the Town Hall for the presentation of the Landmark Plaques and a reception.
Book of Brusly Landmarks. The Book of Brusly Landmark Homes and Sites has been sent to the publisher and the books should arrive in Brusly by November 22, 2008.

Ms. Joanne Bourgeois commented that there had been no further contact from the 10 owners who did not respond to the request for permission to display their homes in the book.
Grant for St. James Square. There has been no action taken on obtaining funds for the proposed improvements and landscaping of St. James Square as a historic area.

JANUARY 2009 MEETING DATE. The date of the January meeting was rescheduled due to the Martin Luther King Holiday. The new date is the fourth Monday, January 26, 2009.

Public comments. There were none.

Mr. Sarradet made a motion to adjourn. Mrs. Jackson seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

The Meeting of the Brusly Landmark and Heritage Commission adjourned at 7:30 PM.
