From The Mayor

This edition of our Newsletter is to remind you of some things that we are often questioned about plus the announcement of our waste oil and antifreeze disposal service. It is a service the Town can provide at no cost to you but is helpful. Please spread the word.

The recently completed Great American Cleanup day brought home our need to reduce the amount of litter. Everyone who participated was surprised at the volume of litter we collected. We need to all work together to reduce litter rather than just being satisfied to pick it up.

Please get ready for hurricane season. You can’t depend on your government services or utilities after a storm. You need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Leash Law

As a reminder, we are including this section of Town ordinances in reference to the “leash law.”

Section 21.1 Animals running at large

(a) No animals, including but not limited to: dogs, cats, hogs, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, mules, fowl, poultry, reptiles and/or domesticated spiders, shall be allowed to roam at large in the municipality, nor shall any vicious animal be allowed to run at large.

b) All dogs shall be kept from roaming at large at all times. Failure of an owner to prevent a dog from roaming at large shall be a violation of this code and subject the owner to a penalty as provided in Town Ordinance section 25.6.

Flags Of Brusly

The Town is considering reopening the highly regarded “Flags of Brusly” program which was offered in 2000 – 2001. Through this program, we are able to display American flags, along with POW flags, along LA Highway 1 on the median within the Town limits. Names of those honored are inscribed on a plaque near the front of Town Hall. Implementing the program will depend on interest from those who wish to participate. Call the Town Hall for more information.

Waste Oil And Waste Antifreeze Drop Off Box

(Located on east side of Brusly Fire Station on St. Francis St., facing Water Board Office)

The White Plastic Toolbox Is Used As A Drop Off Point For Waste Motor Oil And Antifreeze Only. Please Follow These Instructions In Order To Make This Area Environmentally Sound And Also Safe For The Employees:

  • Waste Oil Must Be In A Clean And Sealed Non Breakable Container;
  • Label Each Container Waste Oil Or Antifreeze And Write The Date On Container;
  • Stand Container Upright In The Drop Off Box;
  • Close The Drop Off Box Lid;
  • Containers Will Not Be Returned To The Owner;
  • If You Would Prefer To Retain Your Container, You Must Come Between The Hours Of 6:30 Am And 4:30 Pm Monday Through Thursday, Excluding Holidays. Please Call 749-2909 Before Bringing Oil To Confirm That Someone Will Be Available To Assist You.

Other Forms Of Hazardous Waste Should Not Be Placed In This Receptacle. A Special Date/time Will Be Announced Later For Collection Of Other Hazardous Waste Materials.

New Year’s Day, Jan. 1st

Reminder

Reflective numerals to mark residential and business addresses are available for $10.00 at the Brusly Fire Station on East St. Francis St. Reflective signs are required by parish law so that fire, police and other emergency personnel may easily find a location, especially at night.

Brusly Books

Copies of Brusly Landmarks, featuring Brusly homes over 50 years old, are on sale for $12.00 each at Town Hall during regular business hours. Also available, for $10.00 each, are copies of Brusly 1901-2001: A Place to Call Home.

Hurricane Preparedness

When a Hurricane enters the Gulf:

  • Frequently monitor radio and TV
  • Have your disaster supply kit for each person
  • A 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won’t spoil
  • One change of clothing and footwear per person
  • One blanket or sleeping bag per person
  • A first-aid kit, including prescription medicines
  • Emergency tools, including a portable radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries
  • An extra set of car keys and a credit card or cash
  • Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members

If you know of elderly or special needs residents in your area get their contact information and monitor them or notify your local officials where they are located.
