Minutes of the Brusly Landmark & Heritage Commission – July 19, 2010

A meeting of the Brusly Landmark and Heritage Commission was held on Monday July 19, 2010 in the Council Chambers, Brusly Town Hall, and Brusly, Louisiana.

Chairman Rills called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.

Voting members present: Rose Jackson, Billy Bourgeois, Jim Rills, Sara Grady, Shirley Jordan.
Voting members absent: Shane Sarradet, Margaret Canella.
Non-voting members present: Brian Falcon.
Non-voting members absent: Kevin Durbin, Jason Creighton.

Others present: Marianne Berthelot, Joanne Bourgeois, Edith Owens.

The Chairman introduced new members Mrs. Sara Grady and Mr. Billy Bourgeois.

Upon motion of Mrs. Jackson seconded by Mrs. Jordan the minutes of the October 19, 2009 meeting were approved as written.

The Chairman reviewed the amendments to the Landmark and Heritage Ordinance which allowed the addition of two new members and explained the purpose of the commission to the new members.

Landmark Plaque Applications – Nine applications were received and voted upon.

Mrs. Grady made a motion to recommend approval of the nine applications to the Town Council. Mr. Bourgeois seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

In answer to a question of how plaques are funded, Mrs. Bourgeois informed new members that Landmark Plaques are funded by the town and are limited to a certain number per year. She stated that as of this date with the approval of the nine applications; only three more plaques remain available for the year 2010.

The Secretary informed the members that an additional application was received from Mrs. Wendy Parrish new owner of the “Wiley and Marie Hebert Home” on Bourgeois street, but upon review of the application it was determined that the home does not yet meet the 50-year requirement. The home was built in 1964.

PLAQUE AWARDS CEREMONY – Upon approval of the applications by the Town Council, members voted to hold the Fifth Round awards ceremony on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers.

ST. JAMES SQUARE – Mrs. Canella was not present to give an update on the proposed “Levee Promenade and Walking Trail” for the Town of Brusly. This matter was tabled.

LANDMARK BOOK SALES – Mrs. Bourgeois advised that book sales have slowed down and books are available at the Town Hall.

ANNOUNCEMENTS –

• 100th Anniversary of Brusly High School. Mrs. Joanne Bourgeois made the commission aware of this historic event and advised the commission that at this time she is not aware of any ceremony plans by the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board.

• Brian Falcon discussed the progress of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church renovations and told members that there are plans to hold some sort of ceremony when the steeple is placed on the building.

There was no other business to come before the Commission.

Mr. Bourgeois made a motion to adjourn. Mrs. Grady seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

The meeting of the Landmark & Heritage Commission adjourned at 7:30 PM.
