Minutes of the Brusly Landmark & Heritage Commission – April 15, 2013

A meeting of the Brusly Landmark and Heritage Commission was held on Monday April 15, 2013, Brusly Town Hall, Brusly, Louisiana.

Chairman Rills called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Commissioner Bourgeois led the Pledge of Allegiance. A roll call determined the following officials present:

Commission Chairman: Jim Rills
Commission Members: Billy Bourgeois, Margaret Canella, Sara Grady, Henry Soniat
Advisory Members: Billy Hebert
Absent: Rose Jackson, Shirley Jordan, Brian Falcon, Kevin Durbin
Others present: Joanne Bourgeois, Don Neisler

Upon motion of Commissioner Bourgeois; seconded by Commissioner Canella, the minutes of the January 28, 2013 meeting were approved as written.

Landmark Plaque Applications:
Ms. Joanne Bourgeois announced there were no applications to review. Ms. Bourgeois stated that the following properties would be honored at the next Landmark & Heritage Plaque Ceremony:
• Steve & Michele Sarradet Property 334 W. Main St.
• Lamar & Susan Thomas Property 521 Gwin St.
• Shirley Guidry Property 958 W. Main St.
• Shirley Guidry Property 1222 W. Main St.
• Kevin & Annie Berthelot Property 138 Hebert St.

Commissioners Rose Jackson and Shirley Jordan arrived at 6:32 P.M.

Ms. Joanne Bourgeois presented a historical marker design for the Commission to consider for former Landmark sites around Town. A discussion was had on several different ideas for the marker design. Ms. Bourgeois recommended they consider two sites per budget year to receive former Landmark Site Markers. It was decided to request a budget of $2,500.00 from the Town of Brusly to pursue the purchase of Former Landmark Site Markers. Following several suggestions regarding designs, Chairman Rills stated that he and Ms. Bourgeois would conduct further research into a design for the markers and report findings at the next meeting.

Chairman Rills suggested May 19, 2013 at 3:30 P.M. for the Landmark Ceremony to be held. It was decided to tentatively set the date for the 19th contingent upon the calendar of events being held within the Parish. The calendar of events would be checked for the Tourist Center, WBR Parish and the WBR Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Joanne Bourgeois announced that the Welcome to Brusly signs on LA 1 North & South were in disrepair and there are plans to replace them with newly designed signs. Ms. Bourgeois announced the design being considered by the Town was in the shape of an Oak Tree. There was a discussion held with suggestions made on the design and wording of the new signs. The Commission as a whole supported the idea of the signs being in the shape of an Oak Tree.

A motion was made by Commissioner Bourgeois to adjourn; seconded by Commissioner Canella. The motion passed with a unanimous vote. Commission Chairman Rills adjourned the meeting at 6:57 P.M.
