Town Meeting Minutes – Monday, February 12, 2007

The regular meeting of the Town of Brusly was held this date, February 12, 2007, at the Brusly Town Hall. Mayor Joey Normand called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Council Member Perrault led the Pledge of Allegiance. A roll call determined the following officials present:

Council Members: David Rodrigue, Ronda Perrault,
Joanne Bourgeois, Shane Andre’, Chris Kershaw
Town Attorney: Thomas Acosta, Jr.

A motion to approve the minutes of the Town’s Regular Meeting of January 8, 2007 was made by Council Member Bourgeois and seconded by Council Member Perrault; motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Public Works: None

Planning and Zoning: Council Member Bourgeois stated that the Historic District Study Committee cancelled its February 13th meeting and that members are working individually on researching landmark preservation designation.

Finance Committee: None

Personnel Committee: None

Recreation Committee: Council Member Andre’ announced that the Brusly Wrestling Team won their fourth straight state Championship.
This year the Regional Power Lifting meet was hosted by Brusly High School and was very successful.
There will be three district baseball tournaments next year for this area. There will also be a Southwest Regional fast pitch softball tournament for each girl’s age group which is projected to have a great impact on the economy.
You can visit www.wbrbaseballsoftball.com to register and pay for summer baseball and softball. There will still be sign ups held at the local schools. Registration for soccer teams is presently being advertised.

Police Committee: Nuisance Inspector was on the agenda to give a report but was absent.

Resolutions and Commendations: None
Fire Department: Fire Chief Alleman gave the Fire Chief’s Report for January. There were seven first aid calls outside the Town and 10 first aid calls inside the Town. There was one fire outside the Town. There were two motor vehicle crashes outside Town and one motor vehicle crash inside Town; two mutual aid calls to Addis and three investigations. Total calls for the month were 27.

Police Department: Report for the month of January was given by Officer Ned Robertson. He stated that there were five wrecks, one assistance to other agencies, five traffic arrests, nine damage to property, four alarms, three disturbing the peace, one domestic call, two thefts, one battery, two bench warrants, one assault, one discharging of a firearm, one drug arrest, and 23 miscellaneous calls. There were eight juvenile matters, for a total of 67 calls and 283 citations for the month.

Correspondence: The town received a thank you card from the Village of Rosedale for supporting Mayor Lawrence “Football” Badeaux on 50 years of service with the town.
Brusly’s population is now 2,253 based on an update from the Treasury of the State of Louisiana.
The WBR Kite Fest is scheduled for March 30th to April 1st.

Mayor’s Report: Central Communications is still moving forward.

Remarks of Personal Privilege: WBR Parish Councilman “Petit” Kershaw reiterated that the parish is looking into drainage solutions. He also spoke about the improvements to the parish parks.
Council Member Bourgeois pointed out paintings on display in the meeting chamber portray landmarks that no longer exist in the Town. The painting of the Brusly Drugstore was done by Furcy Rodriguez and presented to Former Mayor Bruce Bourgeois, Sr .in 1968 as a gift from his family; it is on loan from Anatole Vincent. The other depicts the structure that was once a convent, then later the home of the Roland Berthelot family; it is a copy, donated by Mrs. Marianne Berthelot, of her original painting.
Ms. Bourgeois stated that on June 21st, there will be a meeting at the State Office of Historic Preservation to review the information submitted regarding the Brusly (Middle School) Gym to proceed with the nomination process to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
She further stated that Mr. Allirick Hawkins, Brusly High Band Director, BHS graduate, veteran and National Guard member, addressed the Council last week regarding efforts to raise funds for new band uniforms. She stated that we should be grateful to him for his service to our country and should also remember all military personnel in harm’s way, especially Brusly citizen Brett Cavalier, who is presently training prior to being deployed to Iraq.

Announcements: The Town Hall will be closed on February 20th for Mardi Gras.
There will be information on Colon Screening at the Town Hall on March 19th from 9-4pm.

A motion was made by Council Member Perrault to adjourn; seconded by Council Member Kershaw. The motion passed with a unanimous vote; the meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
